Louisville Colorado
As amazing as it is to hear, there is a town in the US that is fairing the economic downturn quite well. With the national unemployment average at over 10%, 6% seems almost impossible. In addition to the fair weather in economic status, this town offers a highly rated education system, low taxes, low crime rate, good health care, multiple world class ski resorts within two hours, Rocky Mountain National Park within one hour, and clear, dry weather that offers sunshine about 300 days out of the year. Where is this dream come true area? Drum Roll please… Louisville Colorado. That’s pronounced Lewis-ville, by the way.
Nestled among the Rockies, this historic down to earth town breaks the pretentious stereotype of the eco-hipster populated town that has been earned by other similarly located ones. Downtown Louisville Colorado has ice cream shops, cozy cafes and a summer long street fair held on Friday nights. It offers the small town feel without the small mindedness of many places that have a population of less than 20,000. Healthy industries in energy, health care and high tech are the predominant reason for the low unemployment rate. Ask most anyone though and they will tell you the biggest appeal factor is the great outdoors. Not only is it very close in proximity to a National Park that has been visited for over 10,000 years, but the town itself has 30 miles of trails and 26 city parks.
Afraid small town life won’t be busy enough for you? Louisville Colorado is located just six miles east of Boulder and 25 miles northwest of Denver. To many that is a shorter distance than their daily commute to work. Since 2005, the town has consistently gained in ranking on several resource’s Best Places To Live Lists. How does a town manage to remain steeped in values and traditions, maintaining a nostalgic ambiance to it and grow as a progressive, modern, high tech town at the same time? Perhaps it has something to do with Louisville being different from most coal camp towns from the beginning. Unlike most such towns, Louisville Colorado was not owned or controlled by a single mining company. This allowed the inhabitants to develop a democratic community that was not under the thumb, so to speak, of mine owners or companies. It remains such a community minded town to this day.
